Throwing Dance and Party Fundraisers

Throwing Dance and Party Fundraisers by Jolian Grant

This is a great way to give people a good time and have them donate money to your fundraiser goal. Creating a good atmosphere with friends, music and sound will help lift the crowds' spirits and will end up benefiting your cause too! Here are a few ideas for throwing a few dance and concert fundraisers.
Decade Dances
You will have to tailor your dances to the age group attending to. Select the time frame and dress to the age group you will be inviting. Talk to your local church, school or community hall to see if they can give you a deal on hall rentals for your dance fundraisers. You may be able to work something out with service clubs like the Knights of Columbus or Lions club if this is a community fundraising event.Decorate the hall in that particular period. Have the volunteers like bartender and coat check dress for that era to help set the mood. The food and drink should also focus from that period. The 30's to the 40's for the older generation, the 50's and 60's for the baby boomers and 70's to the current music for the younger generation. Prepare to break out your pastels for the 80's because they seem to be the most popular in decade dances.
On Air Radio Dance
Radio stations are always looking for ways to increase their listening audience. Call up local radio stations and investigate college and universities in your area who may have stations. Invite them to do a live feed from your dance. The more advance notice you can radio stations the better because they may be able to run commercials for the event.
Concert Fundraisers
Again music will draw the crowds in and concerts help promote both the non profit organizations fundraiser and the bands playing. Most bands will play for good press and depending on the popularity of the group a percentage of the admission can be arranged. There are a couple of key points to take your concert fundraiser from breaking even to lucrative. With advance notice of the gig an open area would be ideal. A large backyard or open space that can be set up free of charge would help to reduce fees. Depending on the age range of the donors who you will be targeting you can try to find local bands that will play for the exposure they will get for the event to a musical group that can span the generation gap.
With the basics of these ideas you can spin your own variation on these and come up with your own personalized fundraiser for your school or non profit group. Have fun with this because it's just as fun to participate in as it is to attend.

Mother of Murdered Son Says He's Still Alive

Mother of Murdered Son Says He's Still Alive by E. N. Joy

When Deborah Morgan purchased a ticket to the Midwest Literary Feast 2010 that was held October 2, 2010, she was prepared to indulge in a smorgasbord of literary delights. She had no idea she would end up serving up the main course.
For the third year, Columbus, Ohio bestselling author Joylynn M. Jossel hosted and treated lovers of the written word from across the map to an evening of entertainment beyond the typical book signing, author readings and Q&A sessions. There was a host of entrees; everything from stand-up comedy from a BET Comic View comic, poetry readings from a poet who appeared on The Apollo, a live band and an author spotlight featuring Essence Magazine bestselling authors. But what hadn't originally been on the menu was a statement from a mother whose son was robbed of his life on Mother's Day three years ago.
"My son touched many lives during his short time here on earth," Ms. Morgan stated about her deceased son, Anthony Jamal Morgan, age eighteen at the time of death. "Through his legacy, he's still alive." Through the Anthony Jamal Morgan "MANifest Your Destiny" Scholarship Foundation, Ms. Morgan's son will sill continue touching lives. Each year a male student from Beechcroft High School is awarded a $2,000 college scholarship in Anthony's name. Beechcroft is the school Anthony would have graduated from in only two weeks from the date of his unsolved murder.
Ms. Morgan was asked to read the dedication of one of the books featured at the Midwest Literary Feast titled Even Sinners Have Souls Too. Unbeknownst to the mother, the literary project had been dedicated in memory of her son. Several copies were given to Ms. Morgan and attendees were asked to purchase the books directly from her; one hundred percent of the sells benefiting the scholarship fund. Guests flocked to Ms. Morgan, relieving her of the books. Even when the books were sold, guests continued to write checks and place cash in Ms. Morgan's hand to benefit the scholarship fund.
So far three recipients have been awarded scholarships thanks to the support of fundraisers and community donations. It is Ms. Morgan's prayer that those recipients will not forget the community that helped support them, and in return, reach back in the future and lend support themselves. Anthony Jamal Morgan, although no longer here in body, definitely still lives in spirit and is still touching lives. For more information regarding the Anthony Jamal Moran Scholarship Fund, please write to P.O. Box 248750, Columbus, OH 43224. Any one with information regarding Anthony's unsolved murder can call Crime Stoppers at 614-645-8477.
